November 2025 updates for Ms. Whitworth

Published: November 19, 2025

Ms. Whitworth writes:

I graduate from Texas Tech University in December with a Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction with a STEM focus - I defended on October 23, 2025. My research focused on virtual communities of practice in online citizen science projects. My other research focuses on cybersecurity, utilizing AI and game-based learning. My time with NITARP helped shape my thoughts on this topic!

She also shared an article from her local Delta Kappa Gamma chapter which notes:

As Executive Director of the North Carolina Science Leadership Association, she serves as a leader in informal STEM education and a passionate advocate for open and accessible science. Her other STEM education work includes leading a National Science Foundation-funded project to redesign and deploy the Pisgah Astronomical Research Institute’s S.C.O.P.E citizen science initiative, connecting innovative, remotely operated instruments for educational use nationwide.

Throughout her career, Whitworth has contributed to Zaniac Learning Center, Western Carolina University, Smithsonian Science for the Classroom, and Pisgah Astronomical Research Institute. Her leadership extends to professional service, including conference proposal reviewing and advisory board membership, and is reflected in numerous grants, publications, and conference presentations. Whitworth’s dedication to inclusive STEM education continues to inspire collaboration and innovation across the field.

A NITARP pause: we are not expecting to be able to support a NITARP 2026 class as a result of the current funding uncertainty. We hope to resume in 2027.
