February 2024 updates for Mr. Swanson

Published: February 12, 2024

Mr. Swanson writes:

I just made a YouTube playlist of eclipse activity videos for MSU Extension. The intended audience is extension agents who are planning outreach events about the 4/8/24 eclipse with 4-H groups around the state of Mississippi. That said, I think they are suitable for any educator (formal or informal) who wants to have some inter-activities that focus on the required alignment that makes solar eclipses such rare and exciting events.

Essentially, these activities are video versions of what I describe in the article (“Right Time, Right Size, Right Place”) that I had published in an ASP book a few years back.

I’m still trying to get some mileage out of a song, “Totality Awesome,” I wrote commemorating the 2017 eclipse. It references the 2024 eclipse in the lyrics so it becomes out-of-date after 4/8. I actually have two versions – one from 2017 when my eldest son sang lead and one from this past summer featuring my youngest son (my eldest can no longer hit those high notes in the bridge). By the way, that’s my middle son playing drums.
