Summer Visit - 2024 - Cyclops AGN

The summer visit to Caltech is 4 days long and is the only time during the year of work when all the participants on the team come together in person to work intensively on the data. Generally, each educator may bring up to two students to the summer visit that are paid for by NITARP, and they may raise funds to bring two more. The teams work at Caltech; the summer visit typically includes a half-day tour of JPL, which is a favorite site for group photos. Reload to see a different set of quotes.

The Cyclops AGN team came to visit in July 2024. The 4 core team educators attended, plus 2 students.

Quotes

  • I think everything that we did is a part of scientific research. We definitely “did” science. We observed and discussed with peers, we manipulated and analyzed data, we had a lot of background research to prepare us for the work we did this summer as well.
  • [The best thing about the trip was] Learning. Really, really. But not just learning. Immersing in this experience and discussing topics with .. the rest of our team made the trip memorable.
  • [This experience has shown me that] I definitely have to get more hands-on with my astronomy unit [in class].
  • It is important to be patient, attentive and thorough, especially when dealing with large quantities of data like we are.
  • The most important things I learned were how to feel comfortable talking about/explaining our topic, learning how to create the correct query in TopCat, and how to evaluate our data.
